WYRD WAYS EXCLUSIVE: My Dying Bride on Nuclear Blast Move and New Material

After 27 years, West Yorkshire Doom Metal giants My Dying Bride have moved their ‘crushing misery‘ to metal monster label, Nuclear Blast Records. Described as “the voice of the hopeless and broken” the band have so far given us 12 studio albums forged from “beautiful grief“.

The thirteenth album sees a move away from previous label Peaceville, and a move to what singer and lyricist Aaron Stainthorpe describes as the ‘formidable’ Nuclear Blast Records.

I was lucky enough to catch up with current sticks man Dan Mullins, to get a bit of insight into the move, and what’s up next for MDB.

On the move to Nuclear Blast:

Well, the talks were conducted and a decision was reached not too long back, obviously details to iron out. But this has been in the works for a good number of months. The signing to NB was a simple matter of the [fact that the] band were approaching the end of their contract with their former label and as such, there were offers placed on the table from a lot of companies wanting to carry on the MDB legacy.

After looking through what was best for the band a decision was made to go with NB. Everyone is totally enthusiastic as ever to push My Dying Bride the same as the band have done since its inception. The energy levels are so on the up currently. The band are engaged in constructing new material which will be on the new record, although it’s early days to say how it will turn out. This momentous occasion has ensured that My Dying Bride can bestow some world class misery upon all. Mercilessly!

Signing to NB was just amazing, they are a great label with a super fantastic team, there to push the band forward! Everyone is enthusiastic and supportive of what it is that My Dying Bride is. It’s a mutual thing; really, they want the best out of the band just as the band want the best out of the label. All on the same page.

And any scoop for us on the new material?

The new material is still a work in progress. We do have plenty of riffs sections and songs, yet until we’ve been through the process it’s hard to say what the feel of this new record will be. However trust me – as an MDB fan myself – it is devastating!

Any UK shows coming up?

This year the only live UK show is the HRH Doom vs Stoner on Oct 1st in Sheffield, which will be great!

When can we expect the new album?

It’s hard to say when the new album will actually land! However rest assured when it does, as always it’ll be a great occasion!

Thanks for talking to Wyrd Ways, Dan!

Watch this space for further news on the upcoming release. If you can make it to Tilburg (Netherlands) in April, for the Roadburn Festival, you might be able to catch MDB perform their 1993 classic Turn Loose The Swans in its entirety, joined exclusively on the drums by Shaun ‘Winter’ Taylor-Steels.

Live dates in full:

22nd April – NL, Roadburn Festival
15th July – POL,  Bolkow, Castle Party
1st October – UK, HRH Doom Vs HRH Stoner

Hi. Welcome to Jazz Club… Nice.

Though Alex Skolnick may be well known as the guitarist of the legendary Thrash Metal band Testament (which he joined at age sixteen, left in the early 1990s and returned to in 2005), these days, more and more recognize him as a “musician’s musician” for whom terms such as shredder, thrasher etc don’t paint the full picture. Describing him as a “genre-defying guitar hero” for a 2015 cover story, Making Music Magazine said:

“Though he’s pretty much a household name in heavy metal, Alex is not your average, everyday shredding guitarist. In reality, he defies categorization by musical genre.” (Making Music, Jan 2015).

For evidence, one needn’t look any further than the Alex Skolnick Trio (AST). AST blend the conviction of rock with the elegance and sophistication of jazz. Conceived while Alex was pursing his jazz degree from New York’s New School University, AST are known for their sophisticated re-harmonisations of classic hard rock and heavy metal songs, along with originals whose depth, humour and character are enthralling to fans across the musical spectrum, achieving legitimacy in the eyes (and ears) of sceptics while converting first-time jazz listeners to the pleasures of music without mosh pits.

The trio’s 2011 album, Veritas, reached the Top Ten of the iTunes jazz charts at no.7, positioned between Dave Brubeck and Esperanza Spalding and was released via the esteemed jazz label, Palmetto Records.  Since their 2002 debut, AST has been honoured with 4 ½ stars by Downbeat, reviewed by Jazziz, The Village Voice, has charted on the Jazz Week radio charts and enjoyed its status among the greats as an NPR Jazz Daily Pick feature.

Fans of the group include international superstars Rodrigo y Gabriella., who have taken the trio on tour, and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo (a noted jazz fan and producer of the upcoming Jaco Pastorius documentary) who joined the band for an impromptu jam at Radio City Music Hall.  AST was also the main support band on Rodrigo Y Gabriela‘s consecutive European and US tour in 2010, including five sold-out nights in London.

Skolnick’s additional instrumental work include his acclaimed 2014 album Planetary Coalition (including Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Kiran Ahluwalia and many others), What’s Next? – a jazz duo album by New York pianist-composer Randy Klein and several stints as a first-call guitarist for electric bass hero, Stuart Hamm. 2016 also saw, after four acclaimed studio albums, the release of the first AST live CD, Live Unbound. This album contains live versions of two of their reimagined remakes (Aerosmith‘s Dream On and ScorpionsStill Loving You) along with a few songs from their last couple studio efforts.  The CD kicks off with two brand new tracks, Unbound and Culture Shock!

Skolnick about the album:

“This recording says that we don’t have much use for limitations.  Our live performances can take us anywhere, from the spirit of quintessential jazz guitar trios to distortion and chaos. It’s all possible. We realized that the live element has been such an important part of what we do, but it’s just never been captured before and it’s never been put out. We have these great new songs that we wanted to do as well, so it just made sense to release them as live versions. (The album) gives us a chance to sort of re-introduce some of the material from earlier albums, but the way we play it live, even if you don’t get to catch us in concert.”

Alex Skolnick Trio:
Alex Skolnick – guitar (Testament, Trans Siberian Orchestra)
Matt Zebroski – drums (Gil Goldstein, Dave Eggar)
Nathan Peck – bass (Maynard Ferguson, Maria Maldaur, Richard Cheese)

Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein Signs with EMP Label Group

Former Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein has signed a label and distribution deal with Dave Ellefson‘s EMP Label Group, who will not only release As We Die, the upcoming second album from the guitarist’s eponymous project Doyle, but distribute all releases for the guitarist’s label Monsterman Records.

Ellefson’s label have already signed up a pretty impressive roster, including A Killer’s Confession, Motograter, Heaven Below (featuring Patrick Kennison of Lita Ford and Union Underground), Broken Teeth, Doll Skin, Helstar, Cage9, Green Death, Arise in Chaos, former Faith No More vocalist Chuck Mosley, and many more.

EMP’s Thom Hazaert:

“I worked really closely with Bruce (Miyaki – Doyle’s Manager) and Monsterman on (Doyle’s 2013 release) Abominator, and I was actually the marketing director out of the gate on that release. Over the years, I’ve stayed involved, and we’re all good friends, and with David (Ellefson), who also had a great relationship with Doyle, eventually as EMP came to fruition the conversation inevitably came up about seeing if there was a fit there. With everything else going on in all of our Worlds, it took a bit of a detour to finally get here, but I can’t express how excited we are to finally be able to put this all together. The legacy of someone like Doyle, who is SUCH a legendary talent, is always such an amazing gift when it comes to putting out records, especially for a label like EMP, where we are all HUGE, genuine music fans. And there’s really not many out there who can hold a candle to Doyle, in terms of talent OR legacy.”

EMP President David Ellefson agrees:

“I’ve always loved Doyle and we’ve had a great relationship that goes back a long time. We’d started some talk last year when Doyle and Alissa (White-Gluz) came out to do some stuff with Metal Allegiance, and it just became an ongoing conversation over the past year. Now that it’s official, we’re extremely excited to be able to not only push out this new Doyle record, which is amazing, but all the killer Monsterman titles via EMP.”

Says Doyle:

“When Dave came to me with an offer for our new CD As We Die it was a no brainer. He has been a good friend of mine for 20 + years, and has never done me wrong, and in this business that’s unheard of. We didn’t want to release it ourselves on Monsterman, we wanted a bigger push and EMP has a lot of exciting things happening in 2017 that will do that for us.”

Doyle is the current project of Von Frankenstein, with Cancerslug vocalist Alex “Wolfman” Story, bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Brandon Pertzborn.

In addition to the upcoming second release from Doyle, EMP/Monsterman will release several limited edition vinyl configurations, as well as a CD reissue of Doyle’s aforementioned Abominator, the upcoming LP from LA Industrial Metal mainstays Dead Girls Corp., and several additional 2017 releases TBA.

Doyle has also announced a (somewhat punishing, looking at when and where the dates are) European Tour in February, including several dates in the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, and more.

Saxon announce Battering Ram tour

NWOBHM icons Saxon have announced 10 dates for the UK leg of their upcoming Battering Ram World Tour, kicking off in Newcastle on 28th October.  They will be joined by special guests Fastway and Girlschool for these much-awaited shows.

“Gonna be a great tour with Fastway and Girlschool”, said frontman Biff Byford. “I think this line up is unique, you don’t wanna miss it.  Looking forward to battering some halls… Welcome to the metal church!”

Fastway, the brainchild of ex-Motörhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke, just couldn’t resist getting together to hit the road with Saxon.  The band have played one-off dates and festivals over the past few years since the release of Eat Dog Eat (SPV) in 2011.  The current lineup features Fast Eddie Clarke with Toby Jepson on vocals, Steve Strange on drums and Mama’s BoysJohn McManus on bass.

Following the release of Battering Ram, Saxon hit the road in Europe with Motörhead for their 40th Anniversary tour, accompanied by Girlschool. Sadly, the tragic passing of Lemmy in December put an early end to the tour, and the entire UK leg planned to begin on January 16th was cancelled – with the exception of a Saxon headlining show in Brighton.

Dates as follows:
28th Newcastle O2 Academy
29th Glasgow O2 ABC
30th Belfast Limelight

1st Dublin Academy (Fastway only)
2nd Manchester O2 Ritz
3rd Bristol O2 Academy

6th Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall

8th Sheffield O2 Academy
9th Nottingham Rock City

* Fastway are the only support in Dublin.

Also on 28th October, Saxon release The Vinyl Hoard, a deluxe eight album vinyl boxset featuring four live recordings.  The albums come in specially designed gatefold sleeves in a slipcase box.

They are:
The Dogs Of War Tour, 1995, recorded on tour in Germany and featuring: Dogs Of War, Denim And Leather, Wheels Of Steel;

The Lionheart Tour, 2004, recorded on tour in France, England and Germany featuring: Lionheart, Court Of The Crimson King, Are We Travellers In Time;

A Night Out With The Boys, 2005: The 25th Anniversary of the NWOBHM, recorded on tour in Germany and Sweden and featuring: And The Bands Played On, Suzie Hold On, Stand Up And Be Counted;

Rocksound Festival, 2006 [2 LP], recorded in Switzerland featuring: Backs To The Wall, Princess Of The Night and Crusader.

Atropas unleash new video

Swiss Metalcore mob Atropas have just released a new video ahead of their East European tour with Words That Burn, starting in Hungary.

Alone is the third single from Atropas‘ current album, Episodes Of Solitude, released on WormHoleDeath Records in September of last year.

The band had this to say about the song:

“We want you to realize what this video is about: Just like the rest of our album Episodes of Solitude, this song is about the horrors of war and we wanted this video to reflect that. There is no sense in killing each other, and in this day and age of people killing each other being omnipresent in our media, we decided to make a statement against exactly that, with our music, our lyrics and now with this new video.

No sense in this whole story, fuck all your grace and glory, I’m but a shadow of who I used to be.

Thanks go to our friend and beautiful model, Nathalie Fontolliet, for being part of this video. This whole thing was filmed and edited by Philipp Smart, who’s also the frontman of our good friends Kill The Unicorn. Thank you very much for your great work.”

Alone is the band’s third single, and is taken off of their album Episodes of Solitude, which is available now in all your favourite online shops.

September Tour Dates with Words That Burn:

Evil Scarecrow Rock You Like A Hurricanado

Nottingham’s *ahem* finest, Evil Scarecrow, hit the road in the wake of their triumphant non-headlining slot at Bloodstock.

After their brilliantly bonkers performance at Bloodstock on the Ronnie James Dio Stage last week to an absolutely huge crowd, all robototroning, crabuloning and hurricanadoing like crazy, Evil Scarecrow are delighted to announce new dates for the start of 2017 and beyond, on their Rock You Like A Hurricanado tour backed by Live Nation.

Previously released dates:
29th October – Corporation, Sheffield
26th November – Midlands Metal Crusade, Slade Rooms, Wolverhampton

7th January – Yardbirds, Grimsby

‘Rock You Like A Hurricanado Tour’:
26th January – Cathouse, Glasgow
27th January – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
28th January – Rock City, Nottingham
2nd February – The Engine Rooms, Southampton
3rd February – Electric Ballroom, London
4th February – Thekla, Bristol

A quote from Dr Hell on the forthcoming shows:

“We’re back on the road for our Rock you like a Hurricanado Tour (see what we did there).  We’ll be bringing our biggest, silliest show yet along with some brand new, probably never heard before, music ‘genius’.  I expect the entire tour to sell out immediately now that we are super famous massive rock stars, so I’ll be personally selling extra tickets on eBay like a dirty tout. Dust off your robot cardboard boxes and get ready to spin on the spot!”
