Oops!

Sorry!

Looks like I forgot to update the links to point to this week's show at the weekend.  They're all fixed now, so please go and download the podcast.  I'll be getting the next one (CLXXXII) sorted out tomorrow as usual.  Expect to hear an interview with Marc Rizzo of Soulfly that I recorded way back at Sonisphere 2010.  Been keeping hold of that one for a while, but with their new album due, I thought now was the time.

In other news, David's 2 years old today (this time two years ago, I was at Dewsbury Hospital with Sarah while David was being operated on to try and stabilize him and keep him alive... now he's a toddler with a love of trains, dinosaurs and diggers... blimey...), so expect some stuff he likes.  Which will probably mean a bit of AC/DC and Alestorm.

Week after next, I'll be at The Well in Leeds for Darkest Era and Alestorm and also the York Viking Festival, at which I intend to FINALLY see Ravenage and the mighty Tyr.  Should be interviewing (probably) Heri, too.

Finally, before I go to bed, I've got half an idea about taking a version of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show to a local community radio station, Phoenix FM in Calderdale, with a bit of help from a friend of mine (and the show), one James McPhillips.  He's supposedly ringing me tomorrow to talk about it... we'll see what happens with that.  That, by the way, doesn't mean I'll be stopping podcasting for the forseeable future, since I'm intending to use broadly the same playlist and script for both shows to cut down my workload.

We'll see how that one pans out.

Another one?!

Another one indeed.  This is getting to be a habit!

Three blog entries in recent memory.  This really doesn't happen very often now, does it?

Anyway.  Went to see Dimmu Borgir this evening.  Interviewed Galder for broadcast at a later date and then went to watch the show.  Wasn't sure how much I was going to bother with (Dimmu weren't among my list of favourite bands).  I was at least going to watch their performance of one of their early albums.  I ended up staying for the lot.  I really did end up enjoying it a lot more than I expected.

I wasn't going to, but chatting with Galder (who is a top bloke, by the way) and seeing the band enjoy themselves, made me buy a t-shirt.  Like I haven't got enough already!  It's getting to the point where I've got gig shirts like most women have shoes.  If most women are Imelda Marcos...

Anyway, back to the point...

Thing is though... Cockpit in Leeds... two things... sort out your sound system and STOP CUTTING GIGS SHORT SO YOU CAN PUT ON THE FUCKING DISCO!!!  This gig, featuring one of the most important bands in Black Metal at the moment, playing a club gig for the first time in years, in order to reconnect with the fans, had a curfew of 10pm so The Cockpit could put on a fucking disco.

Words really do fail me.

Tomorrow night, now, as I write this, over to The Snooty Fox in Wakey for NeonFly and Arthemis (not bothered about Fates Warning, who are headlining, which is a good thing, since I'd've had to leave before their set ended anyway.  Got work in the morning...)

Look!  It's a lesser-spotted tracklisting!

WTF?

Andy Copping has now totally sold out the Download Festival (and not in the "100,000 tickets" way) and Thrash Hits have drunk the Kool Aid...

Prodigy are headlining the Saturday night at Download

Prodigy.

Metallica on Friday night (playing the whole of Metallica), the reformed Black Sabbath on the Sunday night.

This could have been a line-up that even I would have been interested in.  That was until the Saturday night headliner was announced.  The fucking Prodigy.  Andy Copping is pissing on the hallowed turf of Castle Donington.

Anybody fancy organising a lynching...?

Is it just me, or is this a little worrying?

I skip-read an article in this month's Terrorizer (I picked it up off a table in the press room at Damnation... I don't buy the magazines anymore.  I realized after a while that I was getting most of the same press releases, doing the same interviews as the likes of Kerrap!, Mental Hamster and so on, as well as the same interviews and promos... so it was all a bit of a waste of money, really) and discovered that Dave "Junior" Elleffson was looking at becoming a pastor.

Oh boy (to quote Dr Sam Beckett)!

This is going off the scale in terms of weirdness.  OK, we already know that Dave Mustaine's a convicted god botherer (nothing against yer average, normal Xtian... the proper ones are all decent people... it's just the "born again" ones... well, they've all got the same sort of look in their eyes as the creature on the infamous Black Sabbath cover pic on the album of the same name!), but Junior's going one step further.  I've got no problems at all with any kind of religious faith until someone decides they're going to tell me all about theirs, with the express purpose of convincing me that I'm a sinner and I should join them or I'm going to Hell.

So Junior returns to Megadeth and pretty soon after starts talking about becoming a pastor...

How long before they rename themselves Rev Mustaine and The Rockin' Vicars?

*shudder*

Who says drugs aren't bad?

Truer words...

Check out the last paragraph of this press release for one of the most true things I've read in a while...

The Rotted release 'Apathy In The UK' single

UK D-beat Death Metallers The Rotted have released a digital single for 'Apathy In The UK' which also features a bonus Motorhead cover.

'Apathy In The UK' is a standalone track on the new album and different from what we've done before. We chose it as the single because it is a FUCK YOU to all the scencesters, youtube warriors, corporate venues and illegal downloaders that having been ruining metal for the last few years. The music is a brutal and catchy piece of old school UK Grind and the the lyrics talk about what makes Metal great! The gigs and festivals, DIY fanzines, good bands, decent venues and we even reference some '90s London Metal clubs like 'Braindead' and 'The Devils Church'. The places that Dissection, At The Gates, Anathema, Cradle Of Filth, Primordial, Akercocke and Bal Sagoth played some of their first UK shows and where we as musicians first cut our teeth.

Ben's lyrics say it better than I can... "Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash or Punk, Hardcore, Grindcore, Doom or Sludge, To us it was one, DIY was law, It was the underground, And we supported it proud!"

In an ideal world we would have loved to release this on coloured vinyl, or limited edition gatefold sleeve or flexi disc but sadly those days are gone. Our label did that thing where they hold their hand in the air and rub their thumb against their index and middle finger, which we've been told is management speak for "too expensive". So its gonna be digital only, but there is exclusive artwork to download and not only do you get the cost of the single knocked off the album when its released you also get our cover of Motorhead's 'Iron Fist' (taken from the Anarchogram EP) for free too!

'Apathy In the UK' is a call to arms, it's for everyone out there that wants to keep Metal alive! Get off Youtubby, Faceache and Myspazz. Go to a gig, have a beer with the bands, start a fanzine, pick up a guitar and write the heaviest riff anyone has ever heard, buy a CD or piece of Vinyl and support the artists and most importantly wear your metal shirt with pride or get the fuck out of the metal scene!

Oh no! It's a blog post!

This week's show is a little late.  Had a busy day yesterday, and by bedtime I was too wiped out to do any more than I actually did.  It happens.  Consequences of being a parent!

Anyway.  This week's show features interviews with Nightvision (who were one of the real surprise packages of this year's SOS Festival in Manchester) and Exit State.  Who are actually quite good, despite the fact they come from Burnley!

Next week's show will more than likely be more from SOS, probably featuring an interview with members of another surprisingly quality band (who were also on the bill at the Jagermeister Stage at Bloodstock), Inferno.  I only realised they were at Bloodstock when I happened across their driver in the VIP area.  Heh.  These things happen.

In other news, it turns out Dimmu Borgir are touring the UK in November, playing small venues such as The Cockpit in Leeds.  I've requested an interview.  We'll see if it comes off.

Go click on the link, listen to this week's show and tell me what you think.

First bands announced for Bloodstock 2012!

ANVIL FOR RONNIE JAMES DIO STAGE, ORANGE GOBLIN FOR SOPHIE LANCASTER STAGE

BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR has revealed the first two names for next year’s festival.

The first act confirmed for the RONNIE JAMES DIO main stage next year are legendary Canadian comeback kings ANVIL. ANVIL are true defenders of the faith, having never lost sight of their vision to create uncompromising, dyed in the wool heavy metal. They have been on a rock ‘n’ roll journey for the past 30 years and while few bands can make it to the three year mark, ANVIL have closed in on three decades of the most uncompromised and ear pleasing metal known to headbangers.

Ever since the award-winning documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil propelled the Canadian band from their respectable, hard-earned status as a band revered by the likes of Metallica, Motorhead and Guns N’ Roses, ANVIL founding members, vocalist/guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, have made sure that one thing remains constant; their dedication to their music. Their performance at BOA 2012 is bound to be a memorable one in BLOODSTOCK’s history.

Home-grown stoners ORANGE GOBLIN are first to be confirmed for the SOPHIE stage next year. Since the mid 90s, ORANGE GOBLIN have upheld the traditions of great British heavy rock and metal, cementing their place in rock history as pioneers alongside the likes of Monser Magnet, Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Clutch. Since their formation in the late night drinking holes of London’s Soho, the band have risen to the very pinnacle of what they do, earning a reputation as an awesome live band that has seen them share the stage all over the world with the likes of Alice Cooper, Heaven & Hell, Sex Pistols, Kreator, Queens of the Stone Age, Danzig, Monster Magnet, Nashville Pussy, Cathedral, Nebula, Unida, Alabama Thunderpussy, Dio, Grand Magus, Witchcraft and many more. Returning to BLOODSTOCK for the first time since the inaugral indoor event in 2011, anyone under the canvas of the SOPHIE tent while OG are on its stage will be helpless against the sheer power and presence of man mountain/frontman Ben Ward, and will be in for one of the weekend’s highlights.

BLOODSTOCK have released early bird tickets for next year’s fest at rock bottom prices. Four day camping tickets for next year’s event - which takes place 9th - 12th August next year - are available now at bloodstock.uk.com for just £90 (plus booking fee) until December 15th 2011 .

BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2012 takes place at Catton Hall August 9th - 12th

Primordial front man comments on instant voice loss mystery at Bloodstock

Alan Nemtheanga comments here on the strange occurance a third of the way through Primordial's set on Sunday at Bloodstock 2011, when his voice instantly went from full roar to nothing.  From the crowd, it looked like the sound problems that had been plaguing the early sets during the weekend had struck again, but when Alan came back to the mic, it was obviously more serious.  His voice had cracked.  After a brief explanation and apology from the frontman, the rest of the band decided carried on with the help of lively crowd participation, singing along to all remaining numbers:

"Firstly I have to thank everyone for their support and dedication during a very difficult show at Bloodstock on Sunday, we were all deeply humbled by everyone's response and hearing your voices loud and clear singing our own songs back to us was moving.

The simple fact is from one line to the next my voice completely disappeared. From feeling perfectly normal within seconds I could not even whisper. This has never happened to me before in my twenty years of singing. Slowly my voice came back and if we had another hour left I would have been able to sing again. It seems to have either been an allergic reaction to something I ate or drank that morning mixed with a complete dehydration of the vocal chords.

Sitting here typing this I am more or less back to normal. I can only rationalise it that it happens to the best of us and the law of averages states eventually it was going to happen if you play enough shows, this doesn't help the fact that I was and am still gutted we could not give 100% because before it happened the  show was shaping up to be incredible...we could all feel the energy and electricity. I can only humbly apologise and hope that we can come back very soon to make it up to all of you, I am only human and unfortunately also are my vocal chords. This all said we have to thank you all for your understanding, dedication and support as we were all moved by this and also immense thanks to the staff and crew of Bloodstock who really showed their worth and understanding. Much respect to all of you...and hopefully I can chalk this one down to experience."

Alan/Primordial

Bloodstock 2011

Bloodstock starts properly on Friday.  Some hardy souls will be heading down there tomorrow for the warm-up.  The weather forecast looks encouraging, so I'm hoping I won't need the wellies I bought at the Trafford Centre yesterday!

Anyway, here's a list of the bands I'll definitely be interviewing.  There'll probably be a few more that appear as the festival goes on.  You never know, I may even get the headliners (not Immortal, though, since they're only doing three interviews... yes, three!):

Xerath
Byfrost
Arthemis
Wolf
Poisonblack
Kreator
Tryptikon
Tarot
Fantasist
Finntroll
Therion
Power Quest
Hell
Amaranthe
HammerFall
Exodus

I'll be keeping an eye on this page over the next few days, so if there's anything reasonably sensible you want me to ask whichever band member I get to interview, let me know via e-mail (you can click the link on the front page), commenting on this blog entry, leaving a message on the WWRS Wall on Facebook or via a DM on Twitter, and I'll ask it.  I'll also be making regular updates on this page and via Facebook and my Twitter feed.  If you want to keep up with everything I'm up to, here's the relevant addresses:

Bit of an update...

Things have been interesting at Wyrd Ways HQ recently.

There's been a couple of sad things (the passing of both Würzel and Asomvel) and happy things (SOS Festival and being picked up for syndication by PlanetMosh.com).

I think we'll dwell on the happy side.

SOS Festival was held at Radcliffe Civic Suite in Manchester this last weekend.  The bill was mostly made of local bands and bands signed to either Rocksector Management or Rocksector Records (or in some cases, both).  Fortunately, it was an indoor festival, since the weather in across the north of England over the weekend was monumentally crap!

Anyway, I saw some new cracking bands (watch out for Nightvision, Inferno and Population Four) and met some really rather cool people (the guys from Exit State, Population Four and Attica Rage stand out in that respect, from the band side).  I also managed to meet up with Red Imp and her family.  Good to finally meet her chap and kids finally!  Good times were definitely had by all.

Keep listening to WWRS.  Over the following weeks you'll hear the interviews I recorded and quite a lot of the bands I saw over the weekend.

I reckon that's one I'm going to have to pencil in for next year.

Talking of next year... bloody Sonisphere have done it again.  No way I can get down there.  Ah well.  I wasn't impressed by this year's bill, and if they carry on in that vein next year, I really won't be interested.  Just hoping my application for press accrediation for Bloodstock goes through.  I've been looking forward to that one since Twisted Sister's last notes last year!  Excellent bill this year with top bands spread right across the weekend.  I'm looking forward to Tarot, Motorhead (of course), WASP., HammerFall.. and absolutely loads of others.  Hopefully I'll get some good interviews, too.

Right then.  Better go to bed.  Need to be up at 6 tomorrow morning to go to work.  Last few days...

Happy Birthday, Ronnie, wherever you are...

I'm writing this entry on Ronnie James Dio's birthday.  He would have been 69 today.

Sadly, news also reached Wyrd Ways HQ that Michael "Wurzel" Burston died on the 9th July.  He was a member of the first Motorhead line-up I saw, so at least as far as I'm concerned, he was a member of the definitive Motorhead line-up.  He was, apparently, putting together a new project.  He'll be missed.

In other news... I went to a gig at The Snooty Fox in Wakefield last night, and two of the bands on the bill payed tribute to the late, great former Rainbow and Black Sabbath frontman.  It was a bit of a cracker.  Opening the show were Welsh band, Triaxis.  I seem to believe they recently lost one of their guitar players to Power Quest.  If that's correct, they've got themselves an excellent replacement.  The band are tight as anything and the singer has an excellent voice and an engaging onstage persona.  Not much more you could want from a Trad/Power Metal band, really.  Keep an eye on these guys.  They could go far.

Next up was the mighty Stuka Squadron.  Probably the best band of the night.  Despite a dodgy mic at the beginning of the show, the Luftwaffe Vampires tore the place apart.  James "Lord Fang" Begley is a truly excellent frontman (and an excellent chap, but far too hyper to be an Australian!) and the rest of the band play their parts with the kind of belief and enthusiasm you'd be very happy with at a much, much bigger gig.  These guys have got "headliner" running through them like the letters in s stick of Blackpool Rock.  I'd love to see them on a bigger stage, where they have more room to move and really show themselves off.

Then came the co-headliners, the mighty Conquest Of Steel.  According to Charlotte, they weren't really on form that night.  Personally, I thought they'd got better each time I'd seen them, this time included.  Then again, she's seen them more times than I have.  All the classics were there: Steel Is The Law, Bitch Of Steel, their cover of Manowar's Metal Warriors, as well as a couple of songs from their new album, Storm Sword, which actually sound much better live than they do on CD.  As usual, Conqest put on a damned good show, but not quite as good as the band they were following.  To be fair, though, following Stuka Squadron seems to be something of a poisoned chalice.

Finishing up the night were a band I'd only seen once before, a very long time ago.  They'd reformed recently, and I'm glad they did.  Gore.  Madder than a box of frogs and very, very funny.  Also possessed of some excellent comedy Death Metal in the shape of Fallen Down The Stairs Again, Jo Jangles Supercorpse and Be My Speedbump. Definitely a band to go and see if you get the chance.

As for The Snooty Fox itself...it's a cracking little venue, even if (thanks to Trinity Walk) it's become a bit of a bugger to get to.  With a bill like that one last night, it really should have been heaving.  Especially when it would have only cost you £4 to get in.  The problem is, it wasn't heaving.  There was a reasonably sized crowd in there (much better than the "crowd" Asomvel had at Bradford Rios a while ago), but still... More people need to start getting off their arses and supporting their local scene.  That applies wherever in the world you are.  Find out who's playing your local venue and get down there.  And to the venues... get your websites updated regularly and promote your gigs!  You're not going to get people turning up if they don't know who's playing!

Slightly annoying...

Here’s something I’ve been wondering.  How come I can’t buy a copy of the two albums Dee Snider did with his Widowmaker project?  I’ve got them on tape, but I’ve been on Amazon, iTunes and a few other services… but to no avail.  Same goes with Michael Monroe’s Demolition 23 project.  You can’t seem to buy it anywhere these days.

We need to get these albums re-released.  Even if it is just for mp3 download.  You know what we need to do?  Get onto Demolition Records (who Twisted Sister are with these days) and Spinefarm (who Michael Monroe’s with) to work on getting the rights to re-releasing these albums.

Go to work, my minions!

Of exits and entrances...

According to their latest press release, Ace Finchum has rejoined Tigertailz.  So that’s the three surviving members of the classic Bezerk line-up back together.   To be honest, I thought it was really only a matter of time once I found out he’d left Steevi Jamez’s band.  Have to say, though, I really do still feel sorry for poor old Matt Blakout.  He did all that work with them, re-establishing the band, then (allegedly) got sacked by text.  The saddest thing is that he was last seen languishing in a Kiss tribute band…

In other news, an old favourite of mine, and very decent chap, Ginger will be playing his final gig with the Michael Monroe band shortly.  Real shame, that.  Sensory Overdrive is one of my favourite albums.  One of the best albums The Wildhearts  didn’t record.  Real shame it ended.  Shame for Michael Monroe, too.  I really like the guy, having met him a couple of times.

Apparently his replacement is Dregen from The Hellacopters.  Shows how incestuous these things are.  Dregen worked with Ginger on the Supershit666 project a while back.

Anyway, don’t forget about Ginger’s solo acoustic tour, that’s more than likely coming to a small venue near you in August.  Tickets are on sale…

Please go and bid.  Bag yourself a bargain.

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-hah!

Doing my usual bit of advertising/spamming for this week's show, and someone running the Planet Rock Facebook page (John... or was it Peter...? Lobban) seems to have deleted and banned me!  Heh.  So I'm now the show Planet Rock tried to ban!  To be honest, being banned by someone who isn't on the station, and doesn't seem to be connected to it in any real way leaves something of a bad taste.

Am I bothered?  Yes, I am slightly.  I'm also slightly amused.  This is a radio station that seems to think (going by one of it's own jingles) that it "plays all the Rock", yet I've heard nothing on it less than 10 years old.  Several genres of Rock, not even Metal, seem to be completely ignored, whilst giving far too much airplay to the likes of Tom Petty and two (and only two) Steely Dan songs.

I would have thought their listeners would have appreciated the sort of variety of music my show offers.  Then again, maybe that was part of the reason he did ban me.

Then again, he might have thought I was just spamming.

You know what, though, if the situations were reversed, would I have banned me?  No.  I wouldn't.  Part of the whole idea of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show is to help bring Rock and Metal to wider attention.  I'm quite happy to have stations, shows, DJs and bands advertising on my pages.  In fact, I'm putting out a request.  Come and advertise on the Wyrd Ways Rock Show Facebook page.  The only thing I ask is that you give me a plug back.

Cheers.

That is all.

Now go about your business.

Wyrd Ways Rock Show CXLVI

Well, since The Rapture didn't happen and we're all still here, it's time for this week's Wyrd Ways Rock Show!  If you're a Saxon fan, this is going to be of special interest to you.  I've got a couple of tracks from Call To Arms for you to hear.  A couple more next week, too, leading up to the release of the album.

If you like it brutal, there's something here for you, too.  A bit of The Berzerker, The Soulless and Cerebral Bore should be right up your alley.

There's also bits and pieces from Black Stone Cherry, the Black Country Communion, Onslaught and loads of others.

In the Spotlight this week are the mighty Skyclad.  Why? Well, they're getting a whole load of albums re-released and their former vocalist, Martin Walkyier is getting a new Clan Destined album ready, so it really is as good a time as any.

By the way, keep listening right to the end for a bonus track!

Shopping!

Hello folks.

Don't know whether or not you've noticed, but The Wyrd Ways Rock Show now has an Amazon Store attached to it on the Shop page.  Not only will you get Amazon's recommendations, but if you click the relevant link, you'll also get my personal recommendations.  All of this means that if you hear something you like on the show, you can go and buy the mp3 or CD version of what you heard without even leaving the site.

How's that for service, eh?

Go on, then, do us a favour and go and buy your CDs, books, mp3s or whatever else you buy from Amazon via the shop portal on this site.

Please?

I'll be your best friend forever (without the really annoying bits like turning up on your doorstep at 3am, or needing you to bail me out of prison).

Enjoy the rest of the bank holiday.

Carl

It's growing...

The Wyrd Empire is spreading.

Not only does The Wyrd Ways Rock Show have a presence on:
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/The-Wyrd-Ways-Rock-Show/22786428049
ReverbNation: http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/wyrdwaysrockshow
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/wyrdwaysrockshow

If you haven't already, go and join the Facebook and ReverbNation pages.  I'm seriously thinking about ditching MySpace soon.  It's run it's course, and since the changes they made, it's become virtually unusable.  Which has lost me a huge number of listeners, since I can't do the level of advertising I used to do.

Ah well.  Them's the breaks.

Now... what was I saying about the Wyrd Empire spreading...?

I've just started writing some reviews and posting them to WordPress.  The first one, a review of David "Rock" Feinstein's Bitten By The Beast, can be found here: http://wyrdways.wordpress.com.

Go and give it a read.  Leave a comment and keep an eye on it.  I'll be posting more reviews over time, when I have time to write them.

More eBaying!

I'm eBaying again.  Here's what's on offer this time...

We are very proud to announce that John "Swifto" Swift has joined ASOMVEL on bass & vocals. There is no replacing Jay, he was such a unique character. Swifto is Swifto & will not be doing a bad impersonation....he will be riding his own lightning & doing it his way

Keep your eyes open, folks.  There will be more coming over the next few days.  Go and spend your Christmas money.

Some updates and things...

OK folks, presumably you know about the competition, right?  Listen to the show, answer the question and e-mail me the answer, and you can win copies of David "Rock" Feinstein's Bitten By The Beast and Dio's Live at Donington 1983 & 1987.  It's a pretty easy question, too.  Not going to tell you what it is here, you'll have to listen to the show to find out.

Go on.  Get it downloading.  I'll still be here when you come back.

Done it?

OK... a few extra things I've set up for your delectation...

  1. A YouTube Channel, upon which I'll be posting the odd video (maybe even some proper video interviews in future).  I've already posted a few things, including the Powerwolf interview I did at Bloodstock this year.
  2. I've updated the ReverbNation page, and will start posting the interviews I've done in the downloads section, so if you want to hear me talking to people like Johan Hegg, Vreth, Tony Wright... or anyone else I've interviewed over the years, keep checking and it'll probably appear there eventually.
  3. There's also a newly minted Last.fm group.  Not sure what that entails yet, but there are some good people on there already.  Go and join and add your musical tastes to the mix.
That's it for now.  I'm going to try to post here more often to keep you updated.  If I don't see you before, have a good Christmas and New Year, and if you're Pagan (and you're reading today), happy Yule!

Bastards!!!!

Bloody Sonisphere organisers!

Not only have they moved the festival to the beginning of July, which means I could, at most, attend the Saturday and some of the Sunday, THEY'VE ANNOUNCED THE BIG FOUR (Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth) ON THE FRIDAY NIGHT!!

Really, REALLY not happy about that.

Who are headlining the other two nights?  Slipknot and Biffy Clyro...  Bleeeacch

Bastards.

Nuff said...

Slight Technical Hitch

This week's show is going to be a little delayed.  It seems that the version I uploaded earlier on today had a mistake in it, so I've taken that version down and am currently uploading a corrected version.

If you check back again in about 6-8 hours, hopefully the problems should be resolved.

Until then, feel free to listen to any of the other shows I've got on the server!

Cheers.

Asomvel

You all know I'm a massive fan of Asomvel.  As you can probably imagine, I was absolutely stunned and incredibly saddened when I got this news from Lenny this morning:
"It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that Jay-Jay Winter, bassist & singer with ASOMVEL has lost his life in a car accident. With his razor sharp wit and frank opinions, he was loved and respected by all of his peers in the UK Metal community because of his strength of character. We are all stunned by this turn of events. R.I.P. Jay Jay. Lenny Robinson & Ian Wright (ASOMVEL, October 18th 2010)."

The next edition of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show will be dedicated to the memory of a truly excellent bloke.  Althought I only met him the once, the evening I spent with him, Lenny and Ian is a truly memorable one, and one I won't be forgetting in a hurry.

If any of you out there have any memories of Jay Jay or Asomvel you're willing to share, let me know and I'll read them out on the show.

RIP Jay Jay.  You truly are missed.  Gone way too soon.

On the move...

I've just moved into a brand spanking new house near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire (that's in the UK, for those of you who aren't).  That means I've got no phone line, which means no internet access for the next couple of weeks.  In turn, that means I'm using my parents' internet connection to upload and post.

That explains why this week's and next week's shows are shorter.  Don't want to take the piss.  Also, my pot of new bands for Shock Of The New is running somewhat dry.

Come on, guys!  Spread the word!  I will play any decent sounding demos that anyone sends.  All you have to be doing is something I like, and anyone who listens regularly will know what I like, and how wide a spectrum that is.

Remember also that anyone who does get played on the show gets instant access to more than 30,000 new sets of ears.

What have you got to lose?  Get in touch via the contact form, or by e-mailing mail@wyrdwaysrs.com to tell me about your band.

Get yourself heard.  Get yourself on The Wyrd Ways Rock Show.

Bloodstock 2010 so far.

It's wet!

You wouldn't be able to deny the weather was definitely better last year.  The band line-up, on the other hand, is at least as good.  Opeth headlining last night, Children Of Bodom tonight and Twisted Sister tomorrow night... well, you really can't argue with a line-up like that.

As for today, so far the Ronnie James Dio Stage highlights for me have been local lads (as far as I'm concerned, anyway) Evile, who delivered a storming set, literally, since it really chucked it down about halfway through their set, the mighty Onslaught (who I'll be interviewing tomorrow as I type this) and German Power Metal titans, Edguy.

Talking of Power Metal, I also witnessed the awesomeness that is Sonata Arctica.  They put on an almost textbook display of how to really do it.  Brilliant.  That's a band I'll have to put on my "must see" list when they next tour.

One of the surprise packages of the festival so far have been Powerwolf, who were performing on the Sophie Lancaster stage.  They put on a truly excellent set of Traditional German Heavy Metal.  Very much recommended.

Later tonight, I'm looking forward to Children Of Bodom and interviews with Amorphis and The Prophecy (after Devin Townsend - who probably won't play Bad Devil... so not sure I'm really interested!).

Tomorrow, obviously it's Twisted Sister and Korpiklaani as my personal highlights, and I'm definitely interested in checking out Bonded By Blood (if I get down to the arena early enough).  If I get the chance, I'm also looking at checking out Mutant and NeonFly on the New Blood Stage.

OK... onwards and downwards!

Counting down to Sonisphere

Didn't think I was going to get this one, really.

So I was hugely surprised when I got press accreditation.  Unfortunately Sarah and David are going up to Aberdeen tomorrow, so I'll be away from my wife and my little boy for the longest period since Sarah last went up to Glasgow on business and David was born.

In fact, I've NEVER been away from David for more than a few hours.

I'm going to miss them.

But at least I've got something to keep me occupied.  So far, I've confirmed interviews with members of Europe, Karma To Burn, Turisas (it'll be nice to see Mathias Nygard again), Malefice, Evile, Enforcer, Sabaton, Lacuna Coil, Therapy? and Apocalyptica.  I'm still waiting to see if we can rearrange times for interviews with Heaven's Basement and Audrey Horne and I'm also waiting to find out about Anthrax.

I'm also waiting to see about Terrorvision.  Their manager has asked me to ring him to arrange something on the day.  We'll see how it goes.  It'll be nice to have a chat with Tony Wright again.  He was a good bloke and an excellent interview when I met him last.

I'm intending to do a couple of blogs from the site itself, since the press area is supposed to have wifi, but we'll see how it goes.  Hopefully it's better than the service was at Bloodstock last year.  Then again, that was in a tent in a field, and it would appear that the Sonisphere press area is in some sort of conference centre on the Knebworth site.

You never know, I might also find out if I've got Bloodstock press accreditation this weekend.

On other things, I'm a little nervous about the whole camping thing.  Never slept in a tent before, believe it or not.  I've take advice and I'm probably as well prepared as I'm going to be.  Fingers crossed, let's see how this goes.

Ronnie James Dio RIP

Message from Wendy Dio

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

- Wendy Dio

One of the greatest voices in music has died.  I was hoping to meet him at Bloodstock this year.  A true legend has passed.

Next week's show will be a tribute to the musical life of Ronnie James Dio, which means the very best of Rainbow, Dio-era Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and solo material.

Farewell, Ronnie, you'll be missed.

C

What?!

According to a press release, Joey Belladonna will be fronting Anthrax at Sonisphere.

Scott... Charlie... what the fuck are you idiots playing at?!  We all know that John Bush sings rings around Belladonna, and Belladonna has a history of walking out on you... yet you get him back AGAIN!  Are you really that needy?

You really are in danger of squandering the good will I had.

Put it this way... if Joey Belladonna ends up back in Anthrax, We Have Come For You All will have been my last Anthrax album.

C

Gutted!

Turns out Heaven & Hell have cancelled their appearance at Bloodstock this year.  I have to admit I was half expecting that.  You really can't expect a man pushing 70 to recover well enough from cancer treatment to be up and running at full speed within a few months.

Ah well.  Wonder who's taking over as Sunday night headliner?  The site currently says Cannibal Corpse.  Can't say I'm interested.  From what it shows at the moment, I'll be ready for the off after Korpiklaani, unless I've got any interviews after it.

Then again, that might change if they announce another headliner.

Anyway, best wishes to Ronnie Dio and I hope he recovers soon.

Official Statement about Peter Steele from the Type O Negative website

Posted: April 15, 2010, 06:19:19 PM by admin in .

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Type O Negative front man, bassist, and our band mate, Peter Steele passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure.

Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to "Dead Again" released in 2007.

The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results. The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date. We’d like to share our thoughts and those of Peter’s family below.
We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world.

Sincerely,

Josh, Kenny and Johnny

Josh Silver: “Peter, My endless source of frustration, (as I'm yours) you have really done it this time. You have changed and touched countless lives through music, comedy and often brutal honesty. You've made life both interesting and irritating and I could not imagine not having known you for 37 years. It still isn't true in my mind but in time I will miss you and the creating that we all endured together. We certainly disagreed constantly and I believe (and hope) we all learned from each other. Should I call you my brother, friend or neighbor? I can only call you Peter (and usually after 2 PM). We laughed at ourselves more times then I can count. Knowing humans are preposterous creatures and I know we reveled in that fact. I will miss you in time, but at this moment your premature departure seems surreal and has pissed me off to no end. Though I never told you that I harbor a deep respect for you, I do. Goodbye my friend.”

Kenny Hickey: “Peter Steele was one of the most brilliant and funny personalities in music and it was all for real. Half the time people thought he was joking, but he was actually telling the truth. Part of me died with him.”

Johnny Kelly: “It’s impossible for me to put into a few sentences what I am feeling at the moment Peter. I’m not sure if I should eulogize or roast you. Both good and bad, we went on one hell of a ride together and sadly, the ride has come to an end. You truly were a unique person. Your music touched many people. Myself included. Whether it was talking about The Beatles, power tools, how Pluto was no longer considered a planet or calling me at 3am asking me to drive to your house to have a fistfight with you, you always kept it interesting. It was a privilege to have been your bandmate. It’s something that I will always cherish.”

In a statement issued today by Steele`s family: “Legendary Goth/Heavy Metal musician Peter Steele died suddenly Wednesday, April 14, 2010, after a short illness at the age of 48. He wrote and orchestrated the music for the Brooklyn-based band Type O Negative, a groundbreaking group known for its dramatic lyrical emphasis on the themes of romance, depression, and death. Steele, renowned as much for his striking physical appearance as his musical talent, was the creative force behind the bands 20-year success writing most of the material for the their albums. Type O Negative and Steele have been lauded as a major influence by numerous alternative and metal bands. The band gained a worldwide following through touring and recording seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, concert DVDs and music videos. Their 1993 album “Bloody Kisses” went platinum, and the 1996 follow-up “October Rust” went gold.

The music world has lost a great talent, and music fans worldwide are mourning, but for our family we are mourning a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, friend and funny man. Peter Steele was a complex man, known for his brooding looks, his self-deprecating sense of humor, unique view of the world, and most of all his loyalty to his fans, friends and family. Survived by five sisters, the eldest living sister notes that he was more than our brother, he was our son. His untimely death is tragic – a great loss to us and to music. The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results, and funeral plans at present remain unknown. The family thanks fans for their loyalty to Peter and band members, but request that fans and media respect their wishes for privacy.

In addition to his success in music, Peter Steele also tried his hand at acting, appearing in HBO`s Oz and the cult classic film Bad Acid. He also composed music for the film soundtracks “Freddy vs. Jason” and “Mortal Combat”, the television movie “Nosferatu: The First Vampire”, and the soon-to-be released “Living the American Nightmare.”

Some news

You probably know about this already, but according to reports, Peter Steele, frontman of Type O Negative died yesterday of some sort of heart problem.

This week's Spotlight and Covered have been turned over to the band as a tribute to the man.

I'll post the official statement here when I get hold of it.

Been a while, hasn't it?

As you might have seen, I've altered the front page of the site slightly.  You can now download this week's show from either the front page or by going to the Downloads And Archives page (which is currently being updated as I type this).

Can I also ask for more contributions from anyone who reads this?  Part of the reason I do this is for you, the listener.  Please get involved.  If you know of any local bands, or you're in a band yourself, or you work for a promotions or record company and you want your bands to appear on the show, TELL ME!  I can guarantee you exposure to an audience, if I like what I hear.

This show gets somewhere around 30-40,000 listeners EVERY WEEK from all over the world.

Is that something you can afford to lose out on?

Also, while I'm here, does anyone want to sponsor either the whole show, or a segment (such as Shock Of The New)?  If you do, use the contact form to get in touch and we'll talk about it.

Right then... got some work to do (for my actual real job) before I head to the hospital to visit my little boy.

The story of Wyrd Ways Rock Show LXXIX

This story pretty much started on Wednesday 3rd February 2010.  I was at the end of a Yr11 Parents Evening, when at about half past 7, my mobile rang, and my wife Sarah, sounding absolutely terrified, told me her waters had broken.

10 weeks early.

So I (quite literally) sprinted out of the school where I teach and headed home to find no ambulance, but my parents looking after Sarah, who's contractions were now less than two minutes apart.  You'll never know real, absolute fear until you've been through that.  After my Mum had tried again to get an ambulance, one finally arrived, and we headed for Dewsbury Hospital with all possible speed to get Sarah to the delivery room.

It wasn't quick enough.

David Stuart (as we decided to name him) was born in the back of the ambulance at 8:30pm, literally 1 minute from the delivery suite, actually on the hospital grounds, weighing in at a frightening 2lbs 15oz.  Since he was born so early, his lungs hadn't fully finished developing and were surfactant deficient, so he needed to be put on a respirator in an incubator.  He was then moved 17 miles to Pontefract General Infirmary where the NHS Trust's SCBU is currently.  That's where he is now.  He's expected to be there for a while, probably until April, when he was due to be born.  There will be scares on the way.  There was one tonight.  After a really good day, with several small downgrades in his dependancy on various machines (which was also my wife's birthday), at around 7:30 pm, his stats just crashed.  What followed were the most terrifying few minutes of my life as the nurse who was assigned to look after him readjusted the machines and waited.  Fortunately he recovered.

I wrote a large part of this week's show next to David's incubator, with some help from him, and knowing what he liked when he was still inside his Mum.

As I type this, my son is 5 days, 5 hours old and fighting for his life.  I can't lose him.  Just can't.

Just as a heads-up, I'm going to be doing a Wyrd Ways Rock Show Yorkshire Special in a few weeks.  Any suggestions of Yorkshire bands to be included in the show will be appreciated.  I've already got Asomvel, Oakenshield, Def Leppard, Conquest Of Steel, Morpheus Rising, Evile, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Skull Branded Pirates, Sisters Of Mercy and Send More Paramedics... but I need more.

Bit of a preview...

Wyrd Ways Rock Show LXXVII will feature new music from Charred Walls Of The Damned and (taken from Hellbilly Deluxe II, an album I've been waiting for) Rob Zombie.

This week's Covered will be provided by a rather unusual German band by the name of Van Canto.  Ever heard of a capella Metal?  No?  Neither had I until I heard these guys.  Very interesting sound.

If that's piqued your curiosity, drop by and give the show a listen.  It'll be going up on Sunday as usual.
