Accept – The Rise of Chaos

Nuclear Blast

Review by Rick Ossian

Since the addition of Mark Tornillo for the reunion of the band in 2010, these stalwart Teutonic terrors have not rested on their laurels in the least.  In fact, their list of accomplishments reads like a CV of a band half their age.  Their releases Blood of the Nations, Stalingrad and Blind Rage have hit #4, 6 and 1 respectively in their native Germany.  They have also hit #1 in Finland.  The Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK have also yielded high-charting spots for the boys.  Wacken, Masters of Rock and Bang Your Head are among the festivals they have played.  Their list of musical milestones keeps growing and growing.  Along with Mark at the vocal helm are Wolf Hoffman on guitar, Uwe Lulis on guitar, Peter Baltes on bass and Christopher Williams on drums.

Now we come to the best yet – at least, from what I’ve heard.  Naturally, when we hear the first track of a new LP or CD, we expect it to be an arse-kicker!  We want to hear the boys (or girls) open with something incredible.  Something hard-charging, something that grabs your attention and won’t let go.  Luckily for us, The Rise of Chaos is like that on every track!  Surely you jest, Rick, you are kidding us all!  How could there possibly be ten arse-kickers in a row?? It’s not possible.  That, dear reader, is why you must listen.

I’ve decided to go backwards…at least in order of tracks.  Just to kind of shake things up a bit, you know?  The last tune on this wondrous collection is called Race to Extinction.  It was at this point in my listening that I had ultimately decided that the boys deserved top marks.  This outing never let up for a second!  No Blues, no ballads, just one rocker after another!

Carry the Weight is an uptempo, speedy, jamming number.  It’s almost thrashy in its delivery, and the lyrics are somewhat predictable, but the pace is relentless.  “Don’t carry the weight on your shoulders/Don’t carry the weight all alone/It’ll turn your heart to stone”.  In my notes it says HOT DAMN!, so you can imagine my excitement.

Worlds Colliding is another holy shit moment.  Gods, I love the riffs/licks/leads/rock guitar jamming that these blokes have got going!  This is clearly some of the most exciting Hard Rock/Heavy Metal I have heard all year.  The most important thing here is that it is not diluted.  The delivery, the execution, everything is pure Rock“Am I going crazy? Am I losing my mind?” Let’s hope not, Mark! We need you to be lucid for when the ultimate tour comes along!  Please, please play the US, especially the midwest ( Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, etc.).

What’s Done is Done is really good as well.  I found myself several times wondering how they keep up the pace.  This tune will lead you down the Heavy as Fuck Hallway and on the road to Riff City.   “What’s done is done/ the bullet has left the gun/It’s over/You can’t unring the bell”.  Almost haunting lyrics, but the playing is even better. There is an absolutely infectious rhythm bouncing along through this one.  The lead guitar solos work well with the tune as well, and in fact on every track the leads work very well.

Analog Man contains a sentiment that I’ve often professed.  Being “an analog man in a digital world“.  Yes, I get tired of the constant downloading of MP3s.  I prefer CDs over those, and I prefer vinyl over compact discs as well.  I know that I am old – I get called grandpa and griefer all of the time!  That’s what I get for trying to keep up with the kiddos at my job… There is some serious jamming going on here.  Keep up the good work, boys!

No Regrets had me marvelling at the fact that there were five arse-kicking tunes in a row.  It was at this point that I was determined to find and purchase the physical product.  I am hoping for a  vinyl release… I probably mentioned that already!

Kool-Aid get five kool points just for the title.  According to my notes, this was another holy crap moment.

The title track, Rise of Chaos (remember Rise of Chaos?), is probably one of the best tracks here.  It is difficult to pick a favourite, however, as they are all very good.  They come charging out of the box with a wicked lead that will tear your head off!

Hole in the Head is another hard charger.  It will remind you of the things that you DON’T need.

Die By the Sword is where I began this musical adventure.  It is another excellent tune.

In short, if you were an Accept fan back in the old days, then you will no doubt enjoy this collection.  It is not Balls to the Wall or Fast as a Shark, but it’s just as good, if not better.  Top marks!

Verdict: 10/10

Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein Signs with EMP Label Group

Former Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein has signed a label and distribution deal with Dave Ellefson‘s EMP Label Group, who will not only release As We Die, the upcoming second album from the guitarist’s eponymous project Doyle, but distribute all releases for the guitarist’s label Monsterman Records.

Ellefson’s label have already signed up a pretty impressive roster, including A Killer’s Confession, Motograter, Heaven Below (featuring Patrick Kennison of Lita Ford and Union Underground), Broken Teeth, Doll Skin, Helstar, Cage9, Green Death, Arise in Chaos, former Faith No More vocalist Chuck Mosley, and many more.

EMP’s Thom Hazaert:

“I worked really closely with Bruce (Miyaki – Doyle’s Manager) and Monsterman on (Doyle’s 2013 release) Abominator, and I was actually the marketing director out of the gate on that release. Over the years, I’ve stayed involved, and we’re all good friends, and with David (Ellefson), who also had a great relationship with Doyle, eventually as EMP came to fruition the conversation inevitably came up about seeing if there was a fit there. With everything else going on in all of our Worlds, it took a bit of a detour to finally get here, but I can’t express how excited we are to finally be able to put this all together. The legacy of someone like Doyle, who is SUCH a legendary talent, is always such an amazing gift when it comes to putting out records, especially for a label like EMP, where we are all HUGE, genuine music fans. And there’s really not many out there who can hold a candle to Doyle, in terms of talent OR legacy.”

EMP President David Ellefson agrees:

“I’ve always loved Doyle and we’ve had a great relationship that goes back a long time. We’d started some talk last year when Doyle and Alissa (White-Gluz) came out to do some stuff with Metal Allegiance, and it just became an ongoing conversation over the past year. Now that it’s official, we’re extremely excited to be able to not only push out this new Doyle record, which is amazing, but all the killer Monsterman titles via EMP.”

Says Doyle:

“When Dave came to me with an offer for our new CD As We Die it was a no brainer. He has been a good friend of mine for 20 + years, and has never done me wrong, and in this business that’s unheard of. We didn’t want to release it ourselves on Monsterman, we wanted a bigger push and EMP has a lot of exciting things happening in 2017 that will do that for us.”

Doyle is the current project of Von Frankenstein, with Cancerslug vocalist Alex “Wolfman” Story, bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Brandon Pertzborn.

In addition to the upcoming second release from Doyle, EMP/Monsterman will release several limited edition vinyl configurations, as well as a CD reissue of Doyle’s aforementioned Abominator, the upcoming LP from LA Industrial Metal mainstays Dead Girls Corp., and several additional 2017 releases TBA.

Doyle has also announced a (somewhat punishing, looking at when and where the dates are) European Tour in February, including several dates in the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, and more.

Atropas unleash new video

Swiss Metalcore mob Atropas have just released a new video ahead of their East European tour with Words That Burn, starting in Hungary.

Alone is the third single from Atropas‘ current album, Episodes Of Solitude, released on WormHoleDeath Records in September of last year.

The band had this to say about the song:

“We want you to realize what this video is about: Just like the rest of our album Episodes of Solitude, this song is about the horrors of war and we wanted this video to reflect that. There is no sense in killing each other, and in this day and age of people killing each other being omnipresent in our media, we decided to make a statement against exactly that, with our music, our lyrics and now with this new video.

No sense in this whole story, fuck all your grace and glory, I’m but a shadow of who I used to be.

Thanks go to our friend and beautiful model, Nathalie Fontolliet, for being part of this video. This whole thing was filmed and edited by Philipp Smart, who’s also the frontman of our good friends Kill The Unicorn. Thank you very much for your great work.”

Alone is the band’s third single, and is taken off of their album Episodes of Solitude, which is available now in all your favourite online shops.

Inglorious hit the road and plan second album

After racking up a plethora of glowing reviews for this year’s self-titled debut album, British hard rockers Inglorious recently stormed Download.

“After playing to what the crew said looked like 15,000 people, we were high as a kite. No feeling or buzz I have ever had in my life will compete with that immense feeling of pride and happiness,” says frontman Nathan James.

Indeed the crowd definitely seemed to adore what the band offered.  A snippet of the band’s performance can be seen here:

In related news, the band has recently announced that they intend to get busy writing songs for their second album which will be recorded in August for a release pencilled in on the Frontiers Music schedule for the Spring of 2017.  Musically you can expect the logical follow up to the widely acclaimed debut while the band pushes themselves forward.

DeathDealer Announces European Tour this Summer

DeathDealer
DeathDealer

Although the forthcoming second release from DeathDealer, Hallowed Ground, won’t be arriving until September 11th on SMG Records, the band – led by ex-Manowar/Dictators guitarist Ross the Boss – will be hitting the road this summer, with a string of dates in mainland Europe.  Hopefully UK dates will be announced soon.

— Download card with three new DeathDealer songs from the forthcoming Hallowed Ground album (namely, Break the Silence, Plan of Attack, and The Anthem)

The new album was mixed and mastered by Stu Marshall at Frontier Studios in Sydney, Australia, and contains massively epic orchestrations, speed metal anthems, and sing along headbangers, as well.  Pretty much as expected from someone with Ross’ pedigree, really.
