Wyrd Ways Rock Show 17th February 2018

It’s time for another edition of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show, you lucky people!

This week’s show is something of an experiment – I didn’t write a script and the only editing I did was to cut the length of some of the pauses in my speech patterns. Other than that, this is pretty much “as live”.

Sorry to say you’ll hear my personal stream of consciousness as I recorded the show.

Musically, it’s a real mix. There’s Classic Metal, Nu-Nu Metal, Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal, plus a few others. Pretty much something for everyone. So long as you like a bit of Metal in your musical diet.

So what are you waiting for? You know the drill. Download and turn it up!

The next show is coming… be ready!

OK sentients, since I’ve done the recording for the current show, and intend to get it published tomorrow, I’m now taking requests for the #freespinwhatever portion of the next edition of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show.   Might even be tempted to make it a bit Christmassy.

Oh yeah… I’ll also be starting to build the infamous, traditional Yuletide Behemoth, which covers the albums released during this year. The longest one I ever made topped 7 hours.

Suggest a track by clicking on THIS LINK or via the contact form, Facebook or Twitter, and I’ll trade you a shoutout – the only proviso is it’s got to be a song from an album that was released in 2017

Venom Inc. release second song from new album

Venom Inc. unleash their new album, Avé, on 11th August, 2017 via Nuclear Blast.

The band are following their first single, Dein Fleisch, with a second new track from Avé,  Avé Satanas.

Here’s the lyric video:

Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan says: “This is the salute to you all… from our dark hearts to your good black souls… the earth is ours and Lucifer walks with us. We hail our master, we hail our Lord! We present ourselves to you… AVE SATANAS! Welcome to hell you sons (and daughters) of SATAN!”

Paradise Lost tease new album

On 1st September, Halifax (the real, original one in West Yorkshire, not the pretend one in Canada – Ed) legends and general miserable bastards Paradise Lost release a new studio album entitled Medusa.

The lads have promised a return to their doom metal roots for this, their 15th full-length release, which has (obviously – Ed) been named after the Greek mythological Gorgon whose gaze was literally petrifying.

The band will premiere the first track from this freshly forged monster on 7th July.  Play the video below and you’ll hear a snippet from the upcoming single, The Longest Winter.

In addition, the band have announced the Medusa track list, which is as follows:

  • Fearless Sky (8:30)
  • Gods Of Ancient (5:50)
  • From The Gallows (3:42)
  • The Longest Winter (4:31)
  • Medusa (6:20)
  • No Passage For The Dead (4:16)
  • Blood & Chaos (3:51)
  • Until The Grave (5:41)
  • Bonus track: Frozen Illusion (5:45)
  • Bonus track: Shrines (3:59)
  • Bonus track: Symbolic Virtue (4:38)

On 1st September, for one night only, the band will perform their new album in its entirety at the LKA Longhorn in Stuttgart.  More details about this exclusive album release show will be revealed soon, but since the tickets are strictly limited, make sure you get yours now via the Nuclear Blast shop

More Bloodstock bands announced!

Joining Saturday’s Ronnie James Dio main stage bill are Denver-based thrash animals HAVOK.  The band recently released their fourth studio album, Conformicide via Century Media.

Also landing the opening slot on Saturday’s main stage are San Francisco tech death outfit, FALLUJAH.  Check out the video for Abandon, taken from their recently released Nuclear Blast album, Dreamless:

Fleshing out the Sophie bill over the weekend are seven more awesome bands.  Joining us on Friday will be Norwich thrashers SHRAPNEL, Leicester metal five-piece INTERNAL CONFLICT, Yorkshire’s stoner blues squad (WWRS Shock Of The New alumni), IRONRAT and London extremists, CORPSING who feature members of Akercocke and Aghast.

Bringing their critically acclaimed noises on Saturday are heavy prog beasts OHHMS and rounding out Sunday’s line up are British/Chilean thrash/death outfit, CRIMINAL and purveyors of mammoth metal grooves, GRAVIL, who have also appeared on The Wyrd Ways Rock Show.

Phase two of our ‘Metal 2 The Masses’ finalists are also locked down.  These lucky winners of regional heats land a slot on the Hobgoblin New Blood stage…  On Friday, fans of Lamb of God, Fear Factory, Whitechapel should be sure to catch Carlisle champions, SEEK SOLACE IN RUIN:

WYRD WAYS EXCLUSIVE: My Dying Bride on Nuclear Blast Move and New Material

After 27 years, West Yorkshire Doom Metal giants My Dying Bride have moved their ‘crushing misery‘ to metal monster label, Nuclear Blast Records. Described as “the voice of the hopeless and broken” the band have so far given us 12 studio albums forged from “beautiful grief“.

The thirteenth album sees a move away from previous label Peaceville, and a move to what singer and lyricist Aaron Stainthorpe describes as the ‘formidable’ Nuclear Blast Records.

I was lucky enough to catch up with current sticks man Dan Mullins, to get a bit of insight into the move, and what’s up next for MDB.

On the move to Nuclear Blast:

Well, the talks were conducted and a decision was reached not too long back, obviously details to iron out. But this has been in the works for a good number of months. The signing to NB was a simple matter of the [fact that the] band were approaching the end of their contract with their former label and as such, there were offers placed on the table from a lot of companies wanting to carry on the MDB legacy.

After looking through what was best for the band a decision was made to go with NB. Everyone is totally enthusiastic as ever to push My Dying Bride the same as the band have done since its inception. The energy levels are so on the up currently. The band are engaged in constructing new material which will be on the new record, although it’s early days to say how it will turn out. This momentous occasion has ensured that My Dying Bride can bestow some world class misery upon all. Mercilessly!

Signing to NB was just amazing, they are a great label with a super fantastic team, there to push the band forward! Everyone is enthusiastic and supportive of what it is that My Dying Bride is. It’s a mutual thing; really, they want the best out of the band just as the band want the best out of the label. All on the same page.

And any scoop for us on the new material?

The new material is still a work in progress. We do have plenty of riffs sections and songs, yet until we’ve been through the process it’s hard to say what the feel of this new record will be. However trust me – as an MDB fan myself – it is devastating!

Any UK shows coming up?

This year the only live UK show is the HRH Doom vs Stoner on Oct 1st in Sheffield, which will be great!

When can we expect the new album?

It’s hard to say when the new album will actually land! However rest assured when it does, as always it’ll be a great occasion!

Thanks for talking to Wyrd Ways, Dan!

Watch this space for further news on the upcoming release. If you can make it to Tilburg (Netherlands) in April, for the Roadburn Festival, you might be able to catch MDB perform their 1993 classic Turn Loose The Swans in its entirety, joined exclusively on the drums by Shaun ‘Winter’ Taylor-Steels.

Live dates in full:

22nd April – NL, Roadburn Festival
15th July – POL,  Bolkow, Castle Party
1st October – UK, HRH Doom Vs HRH Stoner

The Charm The Fury: New Video ‘Echoes’

Amsterdam based metal band The Charm The Fury have teamed up with Alternative Press, to premiere their new song Echoes. The track comes from their sophomore album, The Sick, Dumb and Happy via Nuclear Blast and Arising Empire records.

Alternative Press describes the track as ‘politically charged’, and is a follow up to January release, Down on the Ropes.

From AP:

“We wrote this song as a response to the aftermath of the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris back in 2015,” says drummer Mathijs Tieken. “At the time, there was an emerging debate whether or not we should be able to offend others—religious beliefs in particular—and whether free speech can go too far.

“In our opinion, being able to express criticism freely is the only thing that stands between us and a total degradation of civilized society as we know it. At the end of the day, offense is something that is taken, not given.”

Potentially controversial, but whatever your political leanings, they shouldn’t get in the way of good metal. This song has a touch of Pantera’s Walk at the start, then launches into some surprising clean vocals in the chorus, which are in stark contrast to the growls and roars of the rest of the track. See what you think.

Suicide Silence and Billboard Debut new Video

Suicide Silence have partnered with Billboard.com to exclusively debut their new conceptual music video for Dying In A Red Room. The track comes from the band’s highly acclaimed, new full-length self-titled offering, which as of today is available everywhere on Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

This track showcases quite a musical shift, with a transition from traditional deathcore to something more akin to Deftones, circa My Own Summer, but less heavy and more introspective.  Typically, reaction from fans is mixed, to the point at which the band live-streamed their own reactions to ‘mean’ comments from listeners who attempted (quite poorly) to pull the earlier single, Doris, to bits.

Speaking to Billboard, vocalist Eddie Hermida explains how they deal with the criticism:

“Honesty. We have always been honest with our music,” he says. “We put 100 percent love and passion into our music and feel the same about all the fans that give us both the fuel and return the love passion we give. I have found that with negative critics online, the best response is ‘thanks.’ I am grateful to even be mentioned in any kind of way by anyone. It means I pressed a button. It means I did my job as an artist. Complacency is death.” (source)
